Day 8 21/3/14 Crete - Rethymno

The best travelling companion ever :-)

From the Fortress wall overlooking the port
Today we visited the old port town of Rethymno, about an hour bus ride from Chania. We debated a car, a scooter, but the bus was less hassle, and cheaper!. Gina did this trip by Vespa when she was 18, she was shocked by how the roads have changed, and how much more developed Crete in general has become.
Time to take 5, relaxing takes effort!

Hey Zigmann, check this out

If these walls could talk, imagine the tales

We arrived in Rethymno and OMG, how beautiful this place is. The old fortress sets an imposing boundary against entry by sea and would have set quite a task for raiders back in the day. The weather was a beautiful 19 degrees with a light breeze, just brilliant.

One of the attractions here was the fishing boats coming into port and selling their haul to local tavernas off the boat. Well there were three problems with this ill-conceived plan, firstly Gina's recollection was now some years old, secondly, where were the fishing boats?. No shortage of cruisers, yachts and other pleasure boats, what about the battle scarred fishing boat!. We looked but to no avail. So we set in search of a Cretan seafood restaurant for lunch, after all, it was now 2pm!. Third problem encountered, no one was serving "fresh" seafood. After a tip from a local baker we found something at least authentic. There we met Bob and Margie, a retired English couple who share their time between their homes in Crete and London. We shared a few stories and a few glasses of Raki. Raki, or "Greek Whisky" has some serious kick, think grappa and you're close.

What we found today was that Rethymno is a tourist hotspot. It is very hip, lots of trendy bars, cafes and nightclubs, a far cry from it's fishing village heritage. We were glad we visited as it was so close. Another perfect day!
