Day 9-10 Chania and Heraklio

Venetian Port at Heraklio

A pretty girl at every port!
So Saturday was our last day in Chania.  We enjoyed a bit of retail therapy, hung around a couple of bars, and enjoyed our last night at a Taverna in the old city, called Portes' (doors in Spanish I believe). This put us in good stead for the 2 hour bus trip the next morning to the port city of Heraklio. Think Geelong, but with olde-worlde charm.

Heraklio is a Venetain port city featuring an old fortress, lots of fighting in the day, and typical venetian architecture. Bus ride was uneventful as one would hope. We got there early afternoon, secured our cases and went searching for a suitable establishment at which to dine. Now if you are thinking to yourself "geez those Tanti's smash the food" well yes you have keenly observed. The culinary experience is as important as the country itself.
Greek-French Patisserie, who knew? And awesome to boot!
After imbibing of the region's finest, we set about sightseeing and getting a flavour of the city. We didn't have a lot of time as we were scheduled to board a ferry at 6pm heading to the the island of Santorini, the next leg of our Greek Odyssey.

OK, so we lingered at the patisserie, is it a crime?
Boarding a Greek ferry to move between islands, the definition of chaos!. Imagine boarding from a ramp at the rear of the vessel, passengers are getting off, at the same time as cars, bikes and semi-trailers. Yep, everyone fills a gap between moving vehicles, horns blaring, and a health and safety incident waiting to happen. Yet, nothing did, people and vehicles, got off and on in the chaos, and everyone was happy. We sailed for six (boring) hours and eventually (boring) arrived at Santorini's port at midnight.. Little did we know of the beauty we would awake to on Monday morning..........
