Day 17-18 (30-31/3/14) - Santorini & Naxos

Big Ferry, let the on-boarding chaos begin
We've been off the world wide interweb for a couple of days as we moved between Santorini to the Island of Naxos. You may remember there was some issue with ferries to Mykonos being cancelled due "gas" problems, so we decided to head to Naxos instead. Naxos is also part of the cyclades island group and known particularly for its beautiful, unspoilt beaches. It is a larger island with a full-time residency of around 20,000 people.
Old world deli - great sights and smells
The ferry trip was a quick two hours, but very  choppy seas indeed. Aside from people the ferry also carries numerous semi-trailers, tour coaches, all manner of vehicle, animal, freight, etc. Not quite Noah's Ark, but you get the picture. We didn't need the sick bag and fortunately were lulled to sleep for most of the trip. Arriving in Naxos was an adventure. The wind was howling as we disembarked with water spraying across the jetty. We started to regret Naxos, not 2 minutes from landing as the weather was shocking!.

We were greeted by a friendly face, our host Sofia who runs the accommodation we are staying at. Turns out she is a vet specialising in large animals and also operates this hotel as another interest. No doubt this is a bit different to sticking your arm into a cow's backside!

Someone huffed and puffed and blew Apollo's house down!
Our first full day in Naxos (Monday) had us out exploring the port town. It has seaside village feel, with lots of restaurants, bars and cafes opening to the water. Boats all shapes and sizes are moored across from the eateries and it is really beautifully presented.

We visited the ruins of the God Apollo's house, only the door frame stands. We are not kidding, we too thought Gods lived in the heaven's!. So much marble, and you wonder at how these monuments were built in their day. We covered all the port town in the day and then some, though always scouting targets for the food part of our odyssey!
Sofia, our host greeting Gina with home-made grape compote

Pondering.....no, nothing
Turns out our host is very gracious and presented us with a welcome pack of home made olive oil and raki, fruit and fresh lemon cake and a local grape compote that tasted like eating muscat.
Fried zucchini

And with Octopus cooked in wine sauce too....very nice!

As usual we found a lovely little taverna for dinner and rounded the day with a hearty meal of real, fresh octupus and vegies. In all an excellent first day in Naxos, the weather turned out to be beautiful, no wind, and 20 degrees. Bring on tomorrow!!
